Tubes vs Tubeless
seycats11:
Looking for some advice...
I recently went tubeless on my new bike and I have had more problems with the tubeless system during the past 2 months than I have with a lifetime of tubed tires. Constant slow leaks no matter how much Stan's No Tubes I use (within reason) and work through the inside of the tire. I nearly threw the bike in the woods today during my Xterra when the tires were flat once I went to the bike phase...I pumped them up 30 minutes earlier!
I am using Stan's No Tubes ZTR rims...they are very difficult to set the tire and almost impossible to set the bead with a tube during the middle of a race (which the tube later ran flat and I had a DNF...nothing like traveling 3 hrs not to finish a race due to a flat!).
Has anyone gone tubeless then gone back to tubes? What I am doing wrong? Should I be using different rims? DT Swiss?
Thanks!

What tires are you using? Are you running rim strips or tape?

Some tires do not work well with Stan's rims. I know that all UST rims, for instance, do not. Which ZTR rim are you talking about? Many are called ZTR Crest, ZTR Flow, etc.
I have had Stan's Arch and Flow rims and have never had any issue with leaks. I've certainly have had issues with a new tire and the initial inflation, but never beyond that.
I found getting that stem tight against the rim via the nut to also be a common place for leaks.
I have tape in all of mine. I do not know of a difference in issues with tape vs. rim strip in tubeless performance, leaks, etc.

Problem with one wheel or both? What tires you running? Could be tire bead not seated/tear in bead, valve leak or rim tape leak. I would use soapy water around the tire sidewall and spoke connections to pinpoint the problem while tire is inflated.

Thanks guys...
Answers to your questions..
-I am using Specialized tires (Captain in the front; Fast Trak in the rear)
-The rear is causing me more difficulties
-I tried soapy water to find the leak but not at the spoke connections...I will look into that
-Rim tape
-ZTR Crest
Chuck...do you have difficulties getting the tire on your Stan's rim? I find it more difficult to get the tire on the ZTR rim than with any other rims I have had in the past. Any tricks? Soapy water works OK but its not available on the trail...
