Broken rear hub

(1/2) > >>

lovetheville:
Greetings,

Was not so pleased to realize yesterday afternoon, before trying to ride (on maybe the last 70 degree day of the year) that my rear hub is broken.  Must have broke last Saturday at Cherokee.  2012 Specialized Epic Comp 29er with just over 250 miles on it.  Not too happy about the Specialized cheapy hub breaking so soon.  At any rate, I'm assuming this is a manufacturing defect and Specialized will cover it.  However, if for some reason they don't, does anybody have suggestions for a good replacement.  Like most MTB part selections, there are millions to sort though.

Thanks for any advise.  Cheers.  Jeremy.

I would highly recommend DT Swiss 340's or shimano XT as a cheaper option and your good until the next ice age.

What's up with it?  These hubs apparently have had some problems (plenty of complaints on mtbr).  142+ hubs are proprietary to Specialized, but apparently 142mm hubs will work if you adjust the RD out.  I bet you will be able to get a warranty replacement.

I am building a bike off of a 2011 Specialized Epic 29er frame and I am not going to use the rear 142+ hub that came with the frame.  I am going to purchase a better quality hub because of all the complaints about the Specialized 142+ hub.

@JoelN...I have heard the same...a 142+ and 142 are interchangeable on the frame but you need to adjust your RD when you go from one to the other.

Since you may have to cut your spokes to put in a new hub, go with a better one...especially if you have any issues with the warranty.

If you are interested in a 142+ hub, I have one I won't be using...

What is broken on the hub?
If it is not a simple fix like the axle or a cone or bearing you will probably be better off to just buy a whole new wheel.  Look at the Stans ZTR's they are a great value on a solid wheel.

Specialized should cover you if you are less than a year from purchase and it is truly a manufacturer defect.  If not, you shop may even be cool and throw you a bone. Worth checking on.
