Need advice for a headlight.

Anyone have suggestions on what headlight will give me the best bang for the buck?  Wanting to do some trail riding at night.

I use 3 $20 torches from dealextreme, works great and they are handy around the house too.  Total cost was around $100 for 3 torches, 6 batteries, charger, and mounts.

Magicshine seems to get a fair amount of love around the net.  They supposedly had some battery issues, but the kits Geomangear.com sells are supposed to be better.  I don't have a Magicshine (or any high-powered light) so I can't personally endorse anything.

I have a couple Magic Shines (I know I paid under $100 for each) and one is enough if used on the helmet...and if you spend the money for a second one to use on the handle bars, it's even better.  I think the best feature is that the power button changes color so you know how much charge is left (Green...75-100%, Blue...50-75%, Yellow...25-50%, Red...0-25%), plus they are far cheaper than all the other high-powered lights out there.

Thanks for the info guys.  Buying a minewt 350 tomorrow.  I might buy a Magicshine light for the bars also.

Here's a shot from my old blackberry with the 2 mc-e torches on my bars and 1 on my helmet, around 900lumens total between the 3.  Tons of light for the short line of sight trails around here.  In reality, it's much brighter since the Blackberry's camera sucked.

Forget the minewt, and get a magicshine. Or get two magicshines. Or one magicshine and two batteries.

All bikers owe magicshine props, because magicshine has exposed the bike light industry for the overpriced/overrated products they were producing. Several name brand now have decent models in the $200 range. Without magicshines influence, I doubt if we could get a decent branded light for less than $300.

I've had no problems with mine in about two years now. I've mtbd, adv raced, camped, and caved with the thing and it still works fine.   Best bang for the buck out there.

Didn't Geoman recall all the Magicshine lights because the batteries melted/blew up? Don't remember the details, but I remember it was pretty bad.

It was the battery packs, but only Geoman recalled them, other sellers didn't.  Only a few caught fire, but apparently caused some serious damage.

Oh, I guess if only a few battery packs mounted fairly close to people's genitals catch on fire, then that's no big deal.  ::)

Maybe that's the "bang for the buck" PR was talking about....

As far as I've been able to determine, all the failures/explosions were when the battery was being charged.    Niteriders have trouble with that too, but it does'nt get publicized.    If you guys want to buy Lupines or whatever, go right ahead.    If you want a great light for the money, get a magicshine.

It's interesting to me that mtbr still refuses to include magicshine in their annual light review.  Supposedly due to concerns about the battery issue.

Whatever.....
