Good to hear mine may have been an isolated incident. The bike industry is goofy.

I too have viper trays on round Yakima bars on a third car! I've also had Thule trays from the 90s. thought it was as good quality. also have a Thule rapid aero on another car that is nice as well. it has rocky mount euro pitchfork trays but I'm a bit disappointed in their hardware (at least for euro pitchfork). the mounting plates are not machined very well and there aren't enough threads to get a good bite when mounting them to slotted bars (like the rapid aero). pain to install. the cover for the bolts is flexy plastic. but euro pitchfork definitely is the prettiest. but probably my favorite is Yakima viper on round bars.

I'm sure this thread is dead but I thought I would throw in my two cents.  For stock racks it's hard to beat the Yakima raptor, plus they are relatively inexpensive compared to a full rack system.  You will get some sway but most factory crossbars have flex that is unavoidable.  Craigslist has them used all the time.  Anyway happy hunting.
